Medication Assisted Treatment
Treating addiction and substance use disorders (SUDs) can be complicated. After all, recovering from addiction isn’t just “not using”--it’s about creating a new framework for your life where you can cope, live, and enjoy everyday without the crutch of dangerous substances.
For some, a closely-monitored medication regimen, known as medication assisted treatment (MAT), can make it easier to stay focused and engaged in treatment and therapy. Medications can also help with some of the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms that often lead to relapse.
Understanding Medication Assisted Treatment
Using medications to treat addiction? Isn’t that just replacing one drug for another?
It’s a common misconception...And a very valid point that needs to be addressed.
Medication assisted treatment is currently approved for alcohol, opioid, and tobacco use disorders. These are substances that can and will kill you when abused.
MAT uses safer, FDA approved drugs to block the effects of a particular substance or help reduce withdrawal symptoms. MAT can be used short or long-term. The goal of MAT is to help improve an individual’s quality of life and willingness to stay focused on recovery.
For most individuals, MAT is just one of many tools used to help a person struggling with addiction. Counseling, psychotherapy, group therapy, case management, and other therapies also play a role in one’s successful recovery.
